By Lewis Hamilton The team was furious when the FIA’s race director Michael Masi messed up the rules to create a single lap race in the winner’s contest.

Hamilton is a duck sitting on an old tire as Verstappen screams in the past after the safe car period, where Masi allowed five cars to get out of the way.

Both Hamilton and Merc feel the results have been manipulated leading to Verstappen won the title in front of a large television audience.

But the Dutchman insists he did nothing wrong and won the title fairly and deservedly on the track.

Asked if he was disappointed to end the season with so much controversy, he said: “No, I don’t, no.

“I’m not disappointed at all. I think it sums up the season as a whole. It’s been crazy for both teams. We gave our all to the end.

“It [controversy] been an important part of the whole season. It’s just been so a few times with rallies or whatever.

“That’s what it is. It’s racing sometimes too. For me nothing has really changed and we won the track.

“I didn’t do anything wrong. I only race when the light is green so it’s interesting.

“There’s always things to consider and that always happens after things like this. Can you look at it and say what should have been done?

“It’s the same in football. Should the referee blow the penalty or shouldn’t he?

“What can we improve? Should we have a different angle of the camera? All these things you will come up with.”

The blurred-eyed Verstappen also revealed that he received a message from the boss Merc Toto Wolff that will raise a few eyebrows.

Despite Merc deciding whether to appeal their failed protests, Verstappen claims he received a text from Wolff saying congratulations.

It gives a big hint that perhaps Merc will give up going head to head with the FIA and Michael Masi.

Verstappen said: “I didn’t hear anything [about the protest]. Toto sent me a text congratulating me on the season and that I deserved to win it, and that was great for him.

“I mean, there was a lot of emotion in the final round from both sides, from both teams. So yeah. I mean, we’ll see what the outcome is.”

Verstappen was delayed by four hours before he could start celebrating his first title, not just in F1 but in singles.

His last title came in 2013 in Go.

And his celebrations lasted into the night, with a video showing him jumping into the pool at 6:42 a.m. Monday.

He said: “It was a long night! I ended up in [Dutch DJ] Martin Garrix’s place is very interesting.

“I spent a lot of time celebrating with all the members of the team together. All emotions were overflowing.

“It was fun but when I woke up, it wasn’t so much fun. I probably regretted that last drink!”

“It’s really nice to have friends and family there and a lot of people are having headaches at the moment.”
