Max Verstappen in sensational threat to quit F1 against Red Bull engineer who helped him win Lewis Hamilton’s world title

MAX VERSTAPPEN has suggested he will quit Formula 1 if key Red Bull engineer Gianpiero Lambiase leaves the team.

That’s according to The Independent, who reported that Verstappen had told Lambiase that his presence was important so he would consider giving up the sport for him.

The engineer was present when the Dutchman won his first world title in a year controversial victory end Lewis Hamilton at the Grand Prix Abu Dhabi.

Verstappen told Ziggo Sport: “I told him I just worked with him. As soon as he stopped, I stopped too.

“Of course, sometimes we can be quite strict with each other, but I want that too.

“He had to tell me when I was a fool and I had to tell him. I always told him that.

“He might have told me that on the radio too, but things have been going really well lately.

“The last few years I tried to be an engineer and he tried to be a driver.”

Verstappen previously revealed how mellow Lambiase can be during a race.

And that’s why the couple formed a strong, growing relationship.

And that relationship helped the 24-year-old win the title after he beat Hamilton on the final lap of the campaign.
