POLICE have cordoned off a large area of ​​downtown Anchorage as police respond to an unspecified incident near the Captain Cook Hotel.

Cherie Zajdzinski, a spokeswoman for the police department, said this was not an active shooting incident.

A Twitter user posted a video said there was an active gunman at the hotel. The video shows an officer near his patrol car in a parking lot pointing a gun at the building.

Police are asking people to avoid the area. They initially warned the public about road closures and a large police presence around 3 p.m.

At 4.45pm, roads remained closed and police cars were seen around the Captain Cook Hotel.

Officers with guns were seen entering the building Anchorage Daily News reports.

Three officers waved passers-by away and told them a man on one of the top floors was threatening to shoot people who said he had access to multiple guns.

Nick Weatherman, manager of Anchorage Pel’meni on K Street, said Alaska News Source Police pulled out rifles and helmets when they arrived at the scene and began pointing their guns at the hotel’s tower.
