ANNAPOLIS, MD (WJZ) – On Wednesday, the Office of the Governor of the Community appointed Katie Gandy as Maryland’s first statewide autism coordinator.
The location was created last year under an invoice signed into law last year by Governor Hogan.
As the autism coordinator, Gandy’s responsibilities will include working on services and programming for people with autism and carers in Maryland.
“This new location will advance autism access and education in Maryland,” said Steven McAdams, office director. “Katie Gandy knows the challenges and opportunities as an advocate and parent of a child with autism. She will be a tremendous asset on this important issue to parents, children and caregivers. ”
Gandy has previously served on the Howard County Autism Association Board of Directors since 2018.
Through social media, Gandy has helped donate communication boards to eight elementary schools to help children who don’t speak better communicate.
“I am excited to begin this new role and begin to build effective, inclusive resources for all people with autism, their families and carers,” said Gandy. “Maryland will remain a leader in autism education, therapy, intervention and resources.”
