Mariners sign Cy Young, Robbie Ray winner to 5 year contract | WSAU News / Talk 550 AM · 99.9 FM

The Seattle Mariners officially signed American League Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray to a five-year contract on Tuesday.

Many stores reported the first deal on Monday. The contract that is being widely reported is a $115 million deal with an opt-out option after three seasons.

“It is very exciting to add our league’s reigning Cy Young Award winner,” said Seattle baseball executive Jerry Dipoto. “He is a man of high character, as well as one of the preeminent offensive pitchers in the game. Robbie brings a real presence to our rotation. ”

Ray, 30, is 13-7 with a league-low 2.84 ERA in 32 appearances for the Blue Jays last season. In 193 innings of the third, he racked up a 248 major league best on his way to winning the first Cy Young Award of his career.

Ray signed a one-year, $8 million free agent deal with Toronto ahead of the 2021 season. Because he turned down a qualifying offer from the Blue Jays, the Mariners had to submit a 2022 draft pick. Their third highest to Toronto.

The Mariners haven’t made it to the knockout stages since 2001, but they’re on a 90-game winning streak – the franchise’s first in 18 years.

“I can’t wait to start in Seattle. I’m here to win,” Ray said in the Mariners statement. “There’s something special going on here as the team is going on a 90-match winning season and I’m delighted to be a part of it.”

The Mariners will be Ray’s fourth major team, who made his brief debut with the Detroit Tigers (2014) before spending five seasons back with Arizona. The Diamondbacks traded him to the Blue Jays in August 2020 along with cash to left-hander Travis Bergen.

In 193 career games (189 starts), Ray has a 62-58 record with an ERA of 4.00. He averaged 11.2 shots per nine innings, the highest percentage in major tournament history among pitchers with a 1,000-min minimum.
