Manchin cuts ad for Republican congressman ahead of primary

Democratic Senator Joe Manchin crosses party lines to support a Republican congressman who faces a primary challenge from a colleague backed by former President Donald Trump.

Mr. Manchin, a former Mountain state governor whose popularity has soared at home for single-handedly obstructing much of President Joe Biden’s legislative program, recently cut a campaign ad for GOP Representative David McKinley.

Mr. McKinley is the Dean of the West Virginia Congressional Delegation, representing the state’s 1st congressional district since 2011. However, the state’s new district map has forced him into an intra-party primary campaign against Republican Rep. Alex Mooney for the state’s newly drawn 2nd district seat of the congressional district.

The advert, released on Friday, shows Mr Manchin looking directly into a camera to deliver a line of attack against Mr Mooney: “Alex Mooney has proven he only cares about Alex Mooney. But West Virginians know that David McKinley is just us.”

Mr. Manchin goes on to accuse Mr. Mooney’s “out-of-state supporters” – a reference to Mr. Mooney’s previous service in the Maryland State Legislature and as Chair of the Maryland GOP – of telling a “blatant lie” about Mr. McKinley by calling him Proposes backed Mr Biden’s ‘Build Back Better’ social spending package.

“David McKinley has always opposed reckless spending because it doesn’t make sense for West Virginia,” he said. Manchin cuts ad for Republican congressman ahead of primary
