MANHATTAN – A man armed with a gun was seen commuting outside the United Nations on Thursday prompting a massive police response and causing severe traffic congestion in Midtown.

Police cars and officers were seen near East 42nd Street and First Avenue, outside the UN. The live stream at the top of this story shows the response.

The situation was first reported around 11am

At 12:20 a.m., the man was still at odds with police when he held the gun to his chest and pointed the barrel towards his head.

Earlier, the armed man was seen walking back and forth in front of flags outside the United Nations as at least one helicopter flew overhead, video in the Citizen app showed.

UN staff are sheltering in place, according to a journalist working for United Nation.

People should avoid the area and traffic already flowing along FDR Drive, according to the NYPD.

This is an evolving story. Refresh to update.
