With a name like Hannibal, Premier League clubs could be forgiven for fearing Man United’s teenage fairy.
But the only thing scary about Hannibal MejbriThe 19-year-old midfielder with curly hair is his talent.
But the loss of Monegasque is in United’s favor, as a player, who also attracted interest from Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspurwith the ace enjoying some practice sessions and a promising first-team guest spot.
HE IS AGED
It was during the FA Youth Cup clash with Leeds at Old Trafford that he really matured two years ago.
Targeted by away fans, with chants like ‘Sideshow Bob is f******s***’, a reference to the main villain in The Simpsons, Mejbri was in end some tough challenges in the game.
But what doesn’t break you, just makes you stronger and Mejbri survived the test – putting on a stellar performance with the ball.
Neil Ryan, U18 United coach, says Time then: “He is a talented boy and like all good players, he will be targeted by any opposition.
“That’s what he had to learn, how to control and focus his energy and not get caught up in that, and I think he did it well.”
Nicky Butt was impressed by the qualities he saw in Mejbri, comparing him to legends Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and David Beckham.
Butt said to Manchester Evening News: “Leaders have always been seen as a Roy Keane, a Steve Bruce, a Bryan Robson, real talkers, real aggressors, real leaders.
“And then you have leaders like Paul Scholes or David Beckham or Ryan Giggs who are quiet but really lead by example in how they play and how hard they work.
“We have old-fashioned leaders, if you will, who will talk to the players and motivate the team,” he said.
“Hannibal (Mejbri) is a leader. The way he plays his football is 100mph, he doesn’t stop running up and down.”
He followed that up with a great double in a pre-season friendly for the first team against Salford last summer and it was soon tied to a new long-term agreement.
FALL OUT BOY
Back in August 2019, Manchester United attacked Mejbri after he was embroiled in a disagreement with Monaco.
“Something bad happened,” said his father Lotfi Mejbri, a former Tunisian footballer. Le Parisien.
“For our family, it was a very difficult life. It was a real shock, a trauma.
“There have been mistakes made and since then, I consider the relationship of trust between the club and our family to have been destroyed.”
And yet, if it were up to his father, the boy would fight on the field instead of quarterback or perform in the hospital theater rather than the stadium.
Despite being a footballer herself, Mejbri Snr insists her hope is to see her son become a lawyer or doctor.
He used to say: “Even if he does [make it as a pro footballer]I don’t want him to have a chickpea for a brain in his head. “
Mejbri has had other suitors in the Premier League.
At the age of 14, he trained with Arsenal and received an offer from Liverpool but ended up going to Monte Carlo.
Lotfi speak: “It’s never been about the money. If we got into that, we might get more than what’s claimed in the press.
“I will tell an anecdote: after signing for Monaco while on holiday in Tunisia, an authorized lawyer from Liverpool called me with a huge offer.
“But I only have one word for him.”
After Man United successfully signed Bruno Fernandes for £56m, Mejbri could find his way to the first team blocked at the moment.
However, Butt thinks that in time he will flourish for the club.
“He’s a very, very talented boy but still very immature,” he said. It is still a baby. He still doesn’t have anything on his body, he needs to increase his size and build up his physique. “
