Man Utd transfer hit with ‘Kalvin Phillips inclined to stay at Leeds as club offer midfielder new deal’

KALVIN PHILLIPS is reportedly looking to extend his contract with Leeds United in a blow to Manchester United’s transfer plans.

The Red Devils had identified the 26-year-old as one of three targets to strengthen the midfield this summer.

Despite United managing just 12 Premier League starts this season through injury, United wanted Phillips to field a revamped midfield partnership with fellow England international and West Ham star Declan Rice.

But the Mancun giants’ transfer plans have fallen into disarray as Phillips has no intention of leaving Elland Road.

Los Blancos want to keep their valuable asset, whose contract expires in 2024, and accordingly The timesthey plan to offer him a new and improved deal to stave off potential interest.

And The Times also claim Phillips is likely to put pen to paper to stay at the Yorkshire club where he made his bones.

Although figures have not yet been reported, Leeds are poised to see a big increase on the £38,000-a-week Phillips is currently earning.

Alongside United, West Ham have also been interested in signing Phillips, who has become a fixture in the England line-up since his debut in 2020.

The Hammers had a Club record bid of £55m for Phillips, who was dropped from Leeds just before the January transfer deadline.

And the Times recently reported on it Aston Villa were ready to outbid the Hammers and offer Leeds £60m for the defensive midfielder.

But along with United, the Hammers and Villa’s cash will not be enough to lure Philips, who is enjoying life with Leeds.

SunSport previously reported that Phillips’ agent Kevin Sharp was keen for Leeds to offer his client a new contract after they turned down offers for the star, who was glad he did.

He said: “Kalvin was delighted that Leeds turned down those offers.

“He has never asked to leave Leeds in all his time at the club and has no intention of doing so now or in the summer.

“But I understand the offer rejected would have been a record for both buying and selling clubs.

“So I would hope that Leeds will deliver on their promise of a new contract for him, which would then put an end to any worrying speculation about his future this summer.”
