An estimated four million refugees have left Ukraine and fled to neighboring countries since Vladimir Putin’s forces launched the attack over a month ago.

Mata, 33, is one of six footballers taking part in the call and the Manchester United star said: “It is heartbreaking to see millions of people flee their homes in Ukraine.”

Bayern Munich sensation Alphonso Davies and Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who are also part of the campaign, can both empathize with the dangers and nightmares experienced by the Ukrainians.

Davies, 21, was born in a refugee camp in Ghana after his family fled the second Liberian civil war.

The winger spent the first five years of his life there before his family relocated to Canada.

And Begovic, 34, had to flee from his home in Bosnia and Herzegovina to Germany in the early 1990s at the age of four.

Leading female stars also joined his call for help – Manchester City’s England full-back Lucy Bronze and Olympique Lyonnais striker Ada Hegerberg, who became the first player to win the woman’s Ballon d’Or.

The players are calling on fans – wherever they are and whatever club they support – to stand together as one team and support people displaced by the war by donating to the appeal.

The former Liverpool and Olympique Lyonnais bronze ace said: “This situation breaks my heart.

“Millions of people, including many children, have had to flee their homes in Ukraine, not knowing what the future holds or when they can return home.

“It’s even more shocking to think that this is in addition to the more than 84 million people who have already been displaced around the world.

“I hope our appeal to people displaced in Ukraine will bring the support they need.”
