Man Utd legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has been confirmed as the new PSV head coach and ruled out from applying for a job at Old Trafford

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has been announced as the new PSV head coach, ending talks of an emotional return to the club.

The Dutchman, 45, will take over the Philips stadium in the summer as the successor to Roger Schmidt.

Last week it became known how that The Dutchman has been considered for the top job at PSV after failing to agree a new deal with German gaffer Schmidt.

Van Nistelrooy coached PSV U19s between 2018 and 2021 before taking charge of PSV – essentially the reserve side – Jong last summer.

Under his tutelage, Jong PSV has won ten, drawn six and lost 14 and is 11th in the Dutch second division.

Recent reports suggested that Van Nistelrooy may have returned there Old Trafford – 16 years after leaving Real Madrid.

It has been claimed United’s potential next manager Erik ten Hag wants one Dutch manager with United connections to work with in the Theater of Dreams.

And it was said that Ten Hag’s Robin van Persie, Jaap Stam and Van Nistelrooy would be considered.

But Van Nistelrooy will not return to England after signing his first managerial job at PSV until 2025.

“I’ve worked extensively with Toon Gerbrands, the current general manager of PSV, over the past few seasons.

“I was convinced that I could aspire to a professional coaching career and originally thought I needed another year to gain experience.

“But sometimes things just take their course and you find that life isn’t entirely doable. This is the right moment to take the next step.”

He added: “A couple of things have come together over the past few months.

“The appointment of Marcel Brand as general manager of PSV and the conversation we had was the last push I needed to make a conscious decision and take this step.

“PSV are ready to embark on a new path this summer and I’m ready to do my part.

“Discussions with the Management Board have confirmed that we are ambitious and want to create something special in the long term.

“I’m looking forward to the upcoming task at PSV.”
