Man describes confrontation with robbery suspect before fatal pursuit in northeast Houston

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it began with a robbery at an Exxon gas station on the Eastex Freeway and Little York. Surveillance video shows the suspect threatening the clerk with a gun, asking him to put cash and cigarettes in the trash. The man was later seen lining up scratch-off tickets when a customer walked up to the counter and faced him.
“I looked like that, and I did (see) him. He had a gun,” Jay Andrade said.
Andrade told ABC 13 he stepped in immediately to stop the robbery.
“I told him, ‘You’re not going to do this to my friend.’ And I went to the door and I tried to block the door. So whenever I tried to get things out of his hands, he pulled out his gun and shot me,” said Andrade, a loyal customer and friend of the staff. salesman said.
The video also shows Andrade pulling the trash can out of the man’s hand. When cash, cigarettes and scratchers fell to the floor, he said the suspect pulled a gun at him.
“He said to me, ‘Stand back or I’ll kill you.” I mean, and I backed up,” Andrade recalls.
The suspect, undeterred by the confrontation, drove to a nearby CVS on the Eastex Freeway and Tidwell, where he used the gun again to commit a robbery, Gonzalez said. When the delegates received reports of robberies behind their backs, they spotted the man and tried to pull him back. When he disobeyed, they said a pursuit had begun.
Houston police said a deputy used their lights and sirens as he sped through an intersection in Laura Koppe and Lockwood. The first officer’s unit collided with a black Kia, causing fiery consequences. The driver of the Kia, Autrey Davis, was killed. Two children in her car were also injured.
“About 5 and 2 years old. We believe the older child is in critical condition. The younger child is in stable condition,” Houston police assistant Chandra Hatcher said.
Hatcher said the co-pilot was also taken to hospital in a stable condition.
“If I could stop him here, I wish I could,” said Andrade, after learning of the chaos that followed the confrontation at the gas station.
