Mads Mikkelsen has raged against method acting in a new interview.
The process by which actors maintain their roles off the set has been a big part of cultural discourse lately, thanks to methodical performances from the likes of Jared Leto and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Actor Mikkelsen, who appears in the lead role of the evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, He replaced Johnny Depp in the role and told GQ that he would never stay in his role full-time.
“This is bulls**t,” Mikkelsen said of method acting.
“But preparation can drive you crazy,” he explained. “What if it’s not a movie – what do you think you’ve accomplished? Am I impressed you haven’t lost your character? You should have dropped it from the start! How do you prepare for a serial killer? Are you going to spend two years checking it out?”
When asked about starring alongside a dedicated Method actor like Daniel-Day Lewis, Mikkelsen said he would “have the time of my life if he kept wrecking the character.”
He added in a mocking tone that he could ask Lewis, “I smoke a cigarette? It’s 2020, it’s not 1870 – can you live with that?”
The actor said “it’s just presumptuous” to practice method acting and accused the media of idolizing those who do it.
“The media is like, ‘Oh my god, he took it so seriously, so he must be amazing; let’s give him an award’,” said Mikkelsen. “Then that’s the talk, and everyone knows about it, and it becomes a thing.”
In a new interview with The IndependentWill Poulter echoed Mikkelsen’s denunciation of method acting.
“When it comes to an actor’s process, whatever that is, as long as it doesn’t hurt the process of others and you’re considerate, then that’s fine,” he said. “But if your process creates an inhospitable environment, then I think you’ve missed the point. Method acting shouldn’t be used as an excuse for inappropriate behavior — and it definitely has.”
Leto is one of the most prominent representatives of method acting. disease Director Daniel Espinosa recently confirmed that the star used a wheelchair to get to and from the bathroom to try and stay in character.
Meanwhile, Cumberbatch revealed he contracted nicotine poisoning three times while smoking unfiltered cigarettes to morph into Ruff Ranch owner Phil Burbank power of the dog.
