Kate and Gerry McCann said while the “possibility may be remote” they still have hope they will see Madeleine again as the investigation progresses.

Christian B, 44, was told this in his German prison cell earlier this week he is now an “arguido” in Portugal.

The full statement, signed “Kate & Gerry,” reads: “We welcome the news that the Portuguese authorities have declared a German ‘Arguido’ in connection with the disappearance of our beloved daughter Madeleine.

“This reflects the progress of the investigation being carried out by the Portuguese, German and British authorities.

“We will be kept informed of developments by the Metropolitan Police.

“It is important to note that the ‘arguido’ has not yet been charged with any specific crime related to Madeleine’s disappearance.

“Although the likelihood is small, we have not given up hope that Madeleine is still alive and that we will be reunited with her.”

An “arguido” – usually translated as “named suspect” or “formal suspect” – is someone who is treated by the Portuguese police as more than just a witness, but has not been arrested or charged.

A written statement from the Portimao branch of Faro’s Department of Criminal Investigation and Prosecution (DIAP) said: “As part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007, one person was declared an arguido on Wednesday.

“The person was appointed Arguido by the German authorities in response to a request from the Portuguese Public Prosecutor’s Office for international judicial cooperation.

“The investigation is being conducted by the Portimao Department of the DIAP in Faro, with the support of the Policia Judiciaria.

“The investigation was carried out in cooperation with the English and German authorities.”

maddie disappeared in 2007 while vacationing with her family in Praia da Luz, Portugal – sparking the most high-profile missing persons case in history.

On May 3rd this year, it will be 15 years since Madeleine disappeared from her family vacation.

Portugal has a 15-year hearing period for murder allegations – meaning police would have a reduced risk of convicting a suspect after the next month.

The news comes after Portuguese police said they would continue to investigate Maddie’s disappearance, while the Met police concluded their investigation.

Parents Gerry and Kate McCann left behind her three children, including toddler twins Sean and Ameliesleep in her apartment while she ate at a tapas bar 120 meters away.

When Kate returned to check on the children around 10pm that evening, she found Madeleine was not in her bed and was missing.

In September of that year Gerry and Kateboth doctors, were sensationally dubbed “arguidos” or “suspects” by the Portuguese police.

The following summer the McCanns were erased by investigators in Portugal who said they had exhausted all avenues in the case. Madeleine McCann’s parents ‘welcome’ Portuguese inquest into Christian B, saying ‘we haven’t given up hope that she’s alive’
