Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot has been accused of hypocrisy after it was revealed that dozens of migrants who recently arrived in the Windy City by bus were secretly sent to a wealthy Republican suburb.
Although Lightfoot repeatedly claimed Chicago would welcome the influx of frontier workers from Texas, at least 64 were directed to a Hampton Inn in Burr Ridge without warning, village officials said.
“Neither the staff nor I have been contacted about the decision to house migrants at Burr Ridge,” complained the village’s Republican mayor, Gary Grasso.
“It’s hypocritical for the mayor of Chicago to complain” that the newcomers are being sent out of Texas just to bring them back to the Republican territories, Grasso told Fox News over the weekend.
“This is not about” the migrants, Grasso insisted, saying, “We are more than happy that people are finding freedom.”
However, Lightfoot and Democratic Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker. using them “as political pawns” in their anger at Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, the Burr Ridge mayor added.
“Chicago has got to have vacant hotel rooms,” Grasso said, noting that the number of arrivals was only “hundreds of people in a city of over a million people.”
“Why are they sending them to the Republican suburbs? You have to ask yourself that,” said Grasso.
Lightfoot has accused Abbott of being “without shame or humanity” for busing the immigrants, which she says is a “racist policy”.
Illinois Gov. Pritzker also said what his Texas counterpart is doing “is disgusting and needs to stop.”
“It shouldn’t be for the Texas governor to take these people and treat them like cattle, treat them like property, put them on buses and send them where he wants to send them.”
Pritzker’s rep confirmed to WGN that some of the arrivals had been sent to Burr Ridge, insisting it was part of a “previous relationship with the hotel being used… previously welcoming refugees and asylum-seekers.”
“It is interesting that local officials choose this particular case to complain to the press about this particular group of asylum seekers, which consists of about 30 families,” the governor’s spokesman said.
“Reg. Pritzker made it clear that Illinois is a welcoming state and xenophobia has no home here.”
Lightfoot’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Illinois Department of Human Services told Fox 32 that many of the 300 migrants who have arrived in Chicago are being temporarily housed in suburban hotels.
Abbott has vowed to keep sending the border workers until the Biden administration tightens its border policy.
