‘Lord of the Rings’ star Dominic Monaghan cooks for his new show ‘Moonhaven’

Dominic Monaghan has played a hobbit in The Lord of the Rings, a shipwrecked man in Lost and a detective solving a crime on the moon in his latest series Moonhaven.

“I like futuristic stories [and] I like murder and detective stories. The most refreshing thing about this show is that it explores the idea that the future could be better,” Monaghan, 45, told The Post.

“Moonhaven”, streaming on AMC+, is set in a version of the future where the earth is dying and there is a utopian community on the moon. Paul (Monaghan) is a detective, but his job is very different from what it looks like on Earth. With an AI system enabling him and his partner Arlo (Kadeem Hardison) to determine the cause and culprit of a crime, their jobs are more akin to those of New Age therapists, comforting people on how to respond to a crime .

Their idyllic existence is shattered when Paul and Arlo are tasked with solving their first murder just before the Fellowship gradually returns to Earth. To complicate matters further, this coincides with the arrival of a trio from the home planet: Bella Sway (Emma McDonald), a cargo pilot and smuggler; Earth Diplomat Indira Mare (Amara Karan); and her bodyguard Tomm (Joe Manganiello), all of whom bring a more skeptical and cynical attitude than the “moon people” are used to.

“The character I’m playing is relatively naive – he’s quite an innocent man, idealistic. So I just stayed in a kind of childish headspace and figured that people wouldn’t lie and be good and do the right thing,” Monaghan said. “Those are the elements of Paul that make him unique when compared to Earthlings.”

“Moonhaven” is the latest in Monaghan’s career in science fiction and fantasy; He has also starred in Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker and X Men Origins: Wolverine, and also currently stars in the Audible podcast series Moriarty: The Devil’s Game, where he plays the villain Sherlock Holmes plays .

“There’s nothing I wouldn’t do, it’s just about characters, that’s what drives me,” he said. “I’m always looking for something new.”

Most genre projects have devoted fan bases, and Monaghan said he’s grown accustomed to it.

“There was a point where ‘Lord of the Rings’ was the biggest movie of every year it came out. So I was lucky enough to be in the biggest movie on earth three years in a row, and then when Lost came out in 2004, I was lucky enough to be in the biggest movie of the year and the biggest TV show in the world,” he said. “It’s at this point that things get hectic. It is then difficult to go to supermarkets and be out and about. I did it anyway, but it definitely got crazy.”

Meanwhile, the Lord of the Rings franchise will soon return to the spotlight with the premiere of the Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on September 2nd.

“I love it. It’s fun to see new life being breathed into this incredible series of books written by Professor Tolkien,” said Monaghan. “I’m interested in what people are doing. Obviously Amazon isn’t shy about and they’ve put a lot of money into this particular project. Fingers crossed that it ends up being something that finds new audiences.”

However, he doesn’t think this will change interest in the films.

“I think these movies are kind of timeless…several times a day people tell me they just finished watching these movies and how moved they were or how important they were to their family. So I don’t know if interest ever really waned. But maybe it will catch up with the Amazon project.

“I’ve done a few conventions [‘Rings’ co-stars] Elijah [Wood] and Sean [Astin] and Billy [Boyd] recently, and when the four of us go out to dinner…you find people losing their marbles, which is fun. I would be the same. If I saw Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, C-3PO, and Chewbacca at dinner, I’d freak out too.”
