LIZ Truss last night warned Brussels needed “urgent progress” in negotiations to end the Northern Ireland border standoff.
But after fresh talks at the bloc’s headquarters, both sides rejected suggestions that they had set a deadline of late February.
Ms Truss said: “I am absolutely determined to defend political stability and peace in Northern Ireland.
“We believe there is a deal that has to be done. We need to make as much progress as we can over the next few weeks.”
Mr Sefcovic said a deal that would help “immediately and significantly” to Northern Irish people and businesses was within reach.
He called on Number 10 to continue to demonstrate “political goodwill” and not stomp threats to blow up negotiations by triggering Article 16.
Instead, he said, negotiations “must focus on the practical challenges” around inspecting cargo going from GB to NI.
