JORDAN HENDERSON can pinpoint the moment he was convinced Jurgen Klopp would transform Liverpool.
And it happened in a Swiss hotel bar after a crushing defeat Unai Emery‘s Sevilla in the 2016 Europa League final.
Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Divock Origi are the only other players who were in the squad against Sevilla that night but are still with the club.
Henderson, an unused substitute for the 3-1 defeat in Basel, said: “Tonight really stands out. I remember going back to the hotel and the guys were disappointed.
“After a result like that, you just want to go to your room, see nobody and bow your head.
“But the gaffer was a bit different than what I expected. He brought everyone down to the bar area and we spent the night together.
“I felt like he knew this was the start of something special.
“We had lost a European final. I was devastated. But the manager behaved differently than expected and his mentality was different.
“The confidence that was transferred to the players. The motivation was to reach another European final. He kind of knew what was coming and over the years he’s been producing that.
“It’s been quite eventful since then. Hopefully we can keep this all going.”
When asked about the defeat against Sevilla: “I haven’t thought about this final for a while. I thought about Unai because we faced him and Arsenal.
“It was important that we came back stronger after the Sevilla defeat.
“I thought Liverpool had a chance to come back stronger and we did. That night was hard to bear.
“We played a really good first half, should have scored more goals, scored another goal and it didn’t count and it was Game No 64 this season and we’ve had a lot of injuries.
“You can’t compare football games when there’s a six-year gap between them.
“We would have liked to win a trophy and you have to learn from those things and we tried to do that.”
Last night Alberto Moreno played at left-back for the Reds but he is now playing for Sevilla. He could be there tonight after coming back from injury.
Henderson said: “I speak to Alberto every now and then and they are a very good team. You saw that in the appearances in the Champions League against Juventus and FC Bayern Munich.
“That shows the quality they have and they also have an experienced manager who has done a great job.
“It will be a tough test, as you would expect in a Champions League semi-final.”
Emery’s win against Liverpool was his third straight Europa League win with Sevilla.
As Arsenal manager, he lost the 2019 final to Chelsea but continued his ridiculously good record in the competition 12 months ago by beating Manchester United in the final.
With that success in Gdansk, Villarreal qualified for the Champions League as they finished only seventh in La Liga. This point is also your current position.
The Anfield skipper claims Liverpool will need to put in a similar performance in both games as they did in the second leg in the previous semi-final when the Reds came from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield to qualify for the final to achieve in 2019.
He said: “We invested everything in the semi-finals both home and away against Barcelona and in the end we were rewarded.
“That applies here and in the away game next week. We have to do our best.”
