Lionel Messi won Ballon d’Or by just 33 points over Robert Lewandowski as full votes revealed

LIONEL MESSI won Saturday’s Ballon d’Or on Monday night – but he was nearly scored by Robert Lewandowski.

The Argentine legend, 34, once again took home the most prestigious individual award 12 years after his first win.

But many fans were upset because Lewandowski, 33 years old, forced to settle in second place.

The star of Bayern Munich won the opening ceremony Striker of the Year awards – but missed his first Ballon d’Or crown.

However, it turned out that Lewandowski was close to winning.

Messi won the cup with a total voting score of 613 – just 33 points more than Lewandowski (180).

Jorginho is also in third place, having won 460 votes after helping lead Chelsea to the Champions League and Italy to Euro 2020.

Karim Benzema is 4th with 239 points, ahead of N’Golo Kante (186) in 5th place.

Cristiano Ronaldo – currently two Golden Balls behind rival Messi – scored only 178.

Manchester United’s Player of the Year beat out Mohamed Salah – one of the favorites for the award – with the Liverpool star picking up 121 points.

Kevin de Bruyne is eighth with 73 points, ahead of Kylian Mbappe – who looked furious after finishing ninth, his lowest ever ranking – with 58 points.

Gianluigi Donnarumma – winner of the Goalkeeper of the Year award – got just 36 points.

For Lewandowski, second place comes as a cruel blow after he was the favorite player for the 2020 crown before the coronavirus pandemic caused the ceremony to be cancelled.

And Messi paid tribute to him in his 2021 acceptance speech, saying: “I would like to mention Robert Lewandowski.

“It’s been an honor to play with you guys.

“Everybody knows and we agree that you were last year’s winner.

“I think France Football should give you the 2020 Ballon d’Or – you deserve it and you should have it at home.”
