Lea Michele replaces Beanie Feldstein in B’way’s Funny Girl

Lea Michele will have the last laugh.

The actress was announced as the new Fanny Brice in the Broadway revival of Funny Girl on Monday.

The “Glee” star replaces Beanie Feldstein, who played the role for less than four months this year and released a controversial statement on Instagram Sunday night explaining her early departure on July 31.

“When production decided to take the show in a different direction, I made the extremely difficult decision to resign earlier than expected,” said Feldstein, 29.

Feldstein has missed numerous performances since the musical opened in April to mostly negative reviews. Her previously announced departure date of September 25 was also ahead of the end of her original contract.

The $15 million production is certainly hoping Michele can turn things around.

She will take the stage at the August Wilson Theater on September 6th. Between August 1st and September 4th, Fanny will be played by current standby Julie Benko. After Michele starts, Benko will also perform regularly on Thursdays.

Jane Lynch, on the other hand, leaves the show on time and is replaced by Tovah Feldshuh in the role of Mrs. Brice.

Michele, 35, has been a fan favorite for years to play Fanny in the long-awaited revival of Jule Styne’s musical, which first starred Barbra Streisand in 1964.

The ‘Spring Awakening’ star performed the signature song ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’ at the 2012 Tony Awards and on the Fox show ‘Glee’.

Michele’s career hasn’t been free of drama either. In 2020, her “Glee” co-star Samantha Ware tweeted, “Remember when you made my first TV gig a living hell?!?! ‘Cause I’ll never forget I think you told everyone that if you had the chance, you’d put my wig on!” Other cast members from various projects have come forward with similar allegations, and Michele has issued a public apology.

Funny Girl is her first Broadway return since leaving Spring Awakening in May 2008.
