Explaining Lage’s Success
Wolves manager Bruno Lage explained his team’s win over Manchester United happened because of the way he read the opponent’s full-back position.
“The most important thing for us is to see where the full-backs are,” said Lage.
“To find space, when they are defending and when they are attacking, to see where they are.
“If you look at the first half, when they were defending and trying to tackle – I saw that from the bench – they had [Edinson] Cavani tries to block Ruben [Neves], Cristiano Ronaldo tries to control [Conor] Coady and the wingers inside.
“So space is outside. That’s why [Nelson] Semedo and [Fernando] Marcal had a lot of chances and a lot of ball in the first half and the boys found those spaces.
“That’s why it’s important when you have the ball to know where the space is and when they’re defending, if [Francisco] Trincao and [Daniel] Podence understands that if the full-back is in front of them or if they go, it’s not your man, so control the space inside.
“That’s why it’s important that we work hard on these questions, the players understand the plan and we deserve the three points.”
