Late-night TV hosts in the US have responded to details that have emerged about Donald Trump’s actions on January 6, the day of the Capitol riots.
This week Cassidy Hutchinson, the chief adviser to Mark Meadows, former President Trump’s chief of staff, made a damning testimony before a House special committee investigating Trump’s baseless stolen election narrative and whether he knew a mob of supporters was perpetrating violence in the US Capitol would perpetrate.
Hutchinson testified that Trump threw a meal against the wall after finding out then-US Attorney General Bill Barr had told The Associated Press that the 2020 presidential election had not been marred by fraud.
“Ketchup was dripping off the wall,” Hutchinson claimed, where Trump’s food had hit the side of the dining room.
“During my tenure, there have been several instances where I have noticed him throwing dishes or turning over the tablecloth, causing the entire contents of the table to fall on the floor,” she said.
Late night presenter Trevor Noah continues speaking The daily NewsHe said Trump “lost his shit” and “got binge eating all the time.”
Jimmy Kimmel Live! Guest presenter Chelsea Handler, meanwhile, called the revelations “really crazy”.
Hutchinson claimed she was told Trump tried to go to the Capitol himself on the day of the riots. “I’m the damn President, take me to the Capitol now,” he reportedly shouted at his Secret Service agent in the presidential limousine.
When the agent refused, Trump allegedly attempted to grab the steering wheel of the car (known as “The Beast”).
“Sir, you have to take your hand off the wheel,” Secret Service agent Robert Engel told Trump, according to Hutchinson. “We’re going back to the West Wing, we’re not going to the Capitol.”

Trump is said to have then tried to attack Engel.
“That’s not how you treat a secret service agent. That’s how you treat a contestant backstage at the Miss Universe pageant,” joked Handler. “Turns out Donald Trump was even more of an asshole than we previously thought.”
“He went for the throat!” said Stephen Colbert. “When you join the Secret Service, you expect to take one to the the President, but not out the president.”
Jimmy Fallon added, “Always good when you need a Secret Service to protect the Secret Service.”
On his Truth Social account, Trump denied the allegations, calling Hutchinson’s testimony “sick” and “fraudulent.”
