accused Cult leader at Sarah Lawrence College Larry Ray forced his young victims to have sex in front of him – and once tortured one genitally with plastic wrap – as part of his sick plan to control the group of impressionable coeds, a witness testified Friday.
Verbal and physical abuse included beatings with a hammer and allegedly forcing a victim into prostitution.
Santos Rosario, 30, was assigned to the jury at Ray’s Manhattan Federal Court Proceedings how the accused maniac physically abused him and his friends after luring them into his orbit in 2011.
“It was an escalating pattern of verbal abuse sprinkled with physical abuse,” Rosario said on the witness stand during the direct investigation by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lindsey Keenan.
“He punched me in the chest, put a knife to my throat and played it off as a joke. He would do these martial arts moves and hold me down… under the pretense of showing me what they’re like,” Rosario added.
When asked if he had seen Ray hit other students, Rosario recalled how the accused sadistic creep used cling film to torture one of his friends, Dan Levin.
“There was a time when he would take a long piece of cling film and twist it into a string and tie it in a knot and then put the ring of the knot around his genitals and twist the cling film with a pencil,” Rosario said. “It was a contraption he made on the spot.”
Prosecutors allege that 62-year-old Ray physically and mentally abused the group of students while extorting money and free labor from them as part of a criminal conspiracy he once described as the “Ray family.”
Former Wall Street trader and former boyfriend of former NYPD commissioner Bernie Kerik joined the group of students after moving into his daughter’s dorm on the campus of Sarah Lawrence College in suburban Westchester County in 2011.
He wowed the kids with fantastic stories about hobnobbing with politicians, law enforcement officials and even former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev.
The next summer, Ray convinced a number of students, including Rosario, to live with him in a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
One of the students, Isabella Pollok, is now being accused of allegedly being a co-conspirator in Ray’s criminal enterprise. Pollok is due to appear in court this summer.
On Friday, Rosario recalled how Ray forced him to have sex with Pollok at the Manhattan apartment and at a home in North Carolina where the accused Sicko had taken her to do unpaid work.
“He told me to go after her while we were out,” Rosario testified of the North Carolina incident.
“I did what he told me to do,” he added.
In New York, Ray sat on a couch in a living room of the Upper East Side apartment and instructed Rosario and Pollok to have sex, the witness said.
“He told me to take my pants off and he told Isabella to have sex with me,” Rosario told jurors.
“How did it feel?” asked Keenan, the federal prosecutor.
“Like I’m not in control of my life,” Rosario replied.
To keep his victims under his thumb, Ray accused them of damaging his property and trying to poison him, prosecutors say.
As a bargaining chip, he coerced the students, including Rosario, into false confessions about the alleged conspiracies against him and recorded the confessions, officials claim.
According to prosecutors, Ray also chronicled some of the mental and physical abuse he allegedly inflicted.
On Friday, jurors heard disturbing audio clips of Ray berating Rosario – while allegedly hitting him with a hammer.
“Ck sucker, piece of st,” Ray barks at Rosario on the clip, before slamming a hammer into his legs.
“Crawl on the floor, dog down,” Ray said in a menacing voice.
“I want to brutally take you out,” Ray said, then hit the ground in front of Rosario with a hammer. “I’ll break bones all over you.”
Ray reportedly ran the cult-like company for almost 10 years until he was exposed in an investigative article in 2019 New York Magazine.
His crimes included forcing one of the former college students into prostitution and collecting around $2 million in sex trafficking proceeds, according to a 17-count indictment against him.
in the Opening speech ThursdayProsecutors painted Ray as a sadistic predator who once handcuffed this victim to a chair and then smothered her with a plastic bag, feeling it was beyond his control.
“He ruthlessly threatened and blackmailed his victims to get what he wanted: sex, money and power,” Keenan told jurors in her statement.
Ray’s defense team claimed the facts of the case were muddled, in part because the alleged victims were “storytellers” who embellished their experiences to fit the narrative of a larger conspiracy.
“To understand what you’re going to hear, you have to go through the mirror, step through the magic mirror and enter another world,” attorney Allegra Glashausser told jurors.
“Truth was complicated by the mirror. Sometimes the Stroytellers couldn’t separate truth from fiction,” she added.
