King Charles, Princes William and Harry begin the final farewell to Queen Elizabeth II

King Charles III and his sons Prince William and Prince Harry were cheered by the crowd on Monday as they began the final, one-day farewell to Queen Elizabeth II.

The King, his children and siblings – Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Edward – followed the flag-draped coffin of the late monarch, mounted on a gun carriage from Westminster Hall to 13th-century Westminster Abbey for the state funeral.

Princes Harry and Andrew wore black dressing gowns instead of their military uniforms after having that privilege stripped from them.

Upon entering the Abbey, the King was accompanied by Queen Consort Camilla and the spouses of the other immediate family members also took their places behind the coffin, including Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.

Earlier, the King’s convoy was seen just after 9:30am local time en route to Westminster Hall along the Mall.

Princes William and Harry also traveled with the new King before the procession of the Queen’s coffin from the Hall to Westminster Abbey.

Harry – who was given permission to wear his military uniform for a vigil – wore a morning suit instead when he arrived in a car with wife Meghan Markle.

Charles, who ascended to the throne immediately after the death of his 96-year-old mother on September 8, will lead his family through the lavish ceremonies that will last most of Monday.

This includes following his late mother’s coffin in three separate processions: to and from the funeral service at Westminster Abbey and to the posting service after driving to Windsor.

After the first procession, his wife Queen Consort Camila will no longer be by his side, but will follow in a car with the new Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton.

Charles had rushed to his mother in Scotland for the news of her impending death. Shortly after this was confirmed, he released a statement saying that “the passing of my beloved mother … is a moment of utmost sadness for me and all members of my family.”

He has since executed an exhausting schedule juggling his new role as king with overseeing the preparations and ceremonies leading up to his mother’s funeral on Monday.

In his first public address as king, he vowed to follow his mother’s example in “lifelong service” as her successor.

Before Monday’s funeral, Charles also spoke with President Biden, who “expressed his desire to continue a close relationship with the king,” the White House said.
