the master had hit United just once in their last seven home games – and had lost the last three.

But De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez each scored two goals City raged in the second half to have a six-point lead over the top.

Guardiola felt their second-half performance was as good as anything they have produced to date.

He said: “I’m not from Manchester but I know what it means for our fans to win the derby. We should have scored more goals.”

“If the second half isn’t our best, I don’t know what we have to do. United is United – eight games unbeaten.

“I’m so demanding but I know my limits and the limits of my players and the second half was excellent.”

Referring to De Bruyne’s performance, Guardiola beamed: “Kevin is back. After the injuries he had problems with his rhythm. But now he scores goals, plays with power.

“He’s one of the best players in the world but he’s still running and working hard, I’m so proud of this guy.”

Guardiola felt his side had a different take on some of their recent losses to the Red Devils.

He said: “I know how the fans feel about United is different than I do – but in the last six years I’ve only won one against United here in the Prem.

“But in recent years when we lost to them we were already champions and we knew we had to win today – we have to win almost every game to be champions.

“Football is emotions. It’s definitely tactics, but it’s also emotions. Without the ball, we are a team with the will and passion to win the ball back from the first minute to the 90th.”

Midfielder De Bruyne said: “It’s about winning game after game. Liverpool won on Saturday but we reacted correctly.

“Sometimes we don’t get a result, but we always play right and we will fight until the end of the season.”

Mahrez took his tally to 21 of the season by scoring twice late, saying: “We totally controlled the second half; when we’re like that it’s difficult to beat us.
