There’s more to this Kevin Harlan story than a second-long soundbite.
In an interview with USA Today, the broadcaster shared a now-viral moment that occurred during a Mavericks playoff game against the Suns this month when viewers appeared to think he was about to attack Odell Beckham Jr. after he threw the Wide Receiver had raised cruciate ligament rupture in Rams’ Super Bowl 2021 win during a slugfest with Reggie Miller.
“What I was going to say, but unfortunately got cut off, was, ‘And look at how he walks after he bruised his knee, knowing he was part of a Super Bowl championship performance,'” Harlan said .
The conversation first began when Beckham and his girlfriend Lauren Wood appeared on the show, with Harlan noting that the free-agent receiver had “good seats” for the game. Miller then challenged Harlan to call Beckham at the “correct title” as the Super Bowl champion, to which Harlan replied, “He broke his knee in the Super Bowl.”
“I couldn’t finish it and I was attacked and that’s the kind of world we live in now. And I was angry that I was upset about it because I didn’t get a chance to finish what I wanted to say because of what the show was doing at the time,” Harlan told USA Today.
With the show soon switching to an interview with the Suns’ Chris Paul, Harlan and his commentary were “left hanging”.
“I wanted to tell a story. i know who he is I’ve called him every year of his career. I was just about to try this thing — you just have to be so vigilant, so vigilant to whatever’s happening,” said Harlan, who calls NFL games for Westwood One. “I was left hanging. I took the brunt of it. I do not want it.”
However, Harlan is moving forward as he will call the Western Conference Finals between the Mavericks and Warriors, which begin Wednesday. Beckham is currently working his way back from surgery and has yet to find his next NFL landing spot.
Beckham had initially signed a one-year deal with the Rams, who had previously expressed interest in his potential return.
