Ken Starr, whose investigation into Clinton’s Lewinsky affair uncovered, 76

Ken Starr, a former federal judge whose investigation into Bill and Hillary Clinton’s Whitewater scandal exposed the 42nd president’s affair with Monica Lewinsky and led to the second presidential impeachment trial in American history, died Tuesday at a Houston hospital.

Starr, a former US Attorney General during George HW Bush’s administration, was 76 years old. He died as a result of an operation, a spokeswoman said.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear and loving father and grandfather, who we admired for his amazing work ethic but who always put his family first,” his son Randall said in a statement.

“The love, energy, endearing sense of humor and fun-loving interest Dad brought to each of us was truly special and we cherish the many wonderful memories we were able to share with him.”

Starr was nominated by President Ronald Reagan in 1983 for a seat on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. He held that post for nearly six years before resigning to become Attorney General, with the current Chief Justice, John Roberts, as his principal deputy.

Bush reportedly considered Starr for the Supreme Court nomination, which ultimately went to David Souter.

In 1994, a special three-person panel at the DC Circuit assigned Starr to investigate Whitewater, a complex investigation into the Clintons’ real estate investments that expanded to include the president’s affair with Lewinsky.

Starr documented Bill Clinton’s illicit encounters with the then White House intern in the Starr Report, which appeared in the summer of 1998. Clinton was acquitted by the Senate in 1999.

Starr is survived by his 52-year-old wife, Alice Mendell Starr, their three children, and nine grandchildren.
