Kate Bush opens up about achievements 37 years after the song’s release

In 1985, English singer-songwriter Kate Bush released a song called “Running Up That Hill”. It did pretty well – it peaked at number 30 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

But 37 years after its release, the tune – which was featured on last week’s Netflix episode “Stranger Things” – has catapulted Harry Styles’ “As It Was” to No. 2 on the US Billboard Top 10.

The unexpected success also makes her the oldest and youngest woman to have a self-penned UK No. 1, Billboard reported.

In a rare interview with BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour podcast on Wednesday, Bush shared her “exciting” thoughts on the song’s resurgence.

“It’s just extraordinary. It’s such a great series, I thought the track would get some attention, but I never thought it would turn into something like this,” Bush said, noting that she was a fan of the series even before her song was in Max’s fight was recorded for survival scene.

“It’s so exciting, it’s actually quite shocking, isn’t it? The whole world has gone mad. I think they put it in a very special place…I thought what a beautiful way to use the song in such a positive way, as a kind of talisman for Max. It’s really very touching.”

Bush, 63, said she hadn’t heard the song in a while because she doesn’t usually listen to her “old stuff,” but was glad the track was introduced to a new generation of fans.

“What I find really wonderful is that it’s this whole new audience that in many cases has never heard of me, and I love that,” she said. “I find it very special to think of all these really young people hearing and discovering the song for the first time.”

The singer told podcast host Emma Barnett that she watched every episode of Stranger Things at the recommendation of a friend.

“It’s nice because it was similar to ‘Harry Potter’ where in those early films they were just little kids and then as the film progresses it gets heavier and darker,” she said.

“And those little kids are growing into really talented young adult actors. And you have a different connection to something that has been moving over the years by watching it grow.”
