Juli Boeheim cries after Duke defeated Syracuse in the ACC tournament

Emotions run high during March Madness, and they hit particularly hard on Thursday for a member of the Boeheim family of Syracuse.

Ninth-seeded Orange seemed poised to land a shocker, leading halfway through the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament in Brooklyn by four points over top-seeded Duke. Syracuse extended their lead to seven early in the second half and were still up by one with four minutes to go.

Then the Blue Devils went on a 10-0 run and that was it.

the 88-79 loss ended Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim’s bid for his first ACC tournament title. It also made his wife Juli emotional as ESPN cameras captured her seemingly tearful immediately after the loss.

It was understandable.

At 16-17 overall and 9-11 in the ACC, Syracuse doesn’t go to the NCAA tournament. It may also be the last time Juli sees her husband and their two sons, Jimmy and Buddy, all together for the Orange.

Buddy Boeheim, who led Syracuse and the ACC with 19.2 points per game this season, is a senior while younger brother Jimmy is a graduate student. The brothers also couldn’t share the floor on Thursday, with Buddy, a first-team All-ACC selection, banned for the game after delivering a punch in Wednesday’s win over Florida State.

It was also a tough week for July that was robbed at gunpoint on the 1st of March. The Syracuse Police Department said a man swung a gun at her in the face and stole her purse while he was in her car near a cheesecake factory.

The Orange, who lost to Duke by 20 and 25 points in the regular season, put up a valiant fight on Thursday, led by a season-high 28 points from Jimmy Boeheim, who also helped keep Pablo Banchero down to just 10 points. But all Buddy Boeheim could do was watch from the bench as Wendell Moore lost 26 on the Orange while three other Duke players scored in double figures.
