Judd Apatow is receiving backlash for his now-deleted comment about Will Smith beating Chris Rock at the Academy Awards on Sunday (March 27).
Rock presented the award for best documentary when he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s performance.
“Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2He can’t wait to see you,” he joked in an apparent reference to the actor’s shaved head.
Smith then took to the stage and punched the comedian, yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out of your friggin’ mouth.”
the King Richard Star later won the Best Actor award and delivered a tearful speech apologizing to the Academy and his fellow actors — but most importantly not Rock.
Shortly after the shocking events unfolded, Apatow posted a comment on Smith’s reaction on Twitter, writing: “He (Smith) could have killed him. This is pure out of control anger and violence.
“You’ve heard a million jokes about her over the last three decades. You are not new to the world of Hollywood and comedy. He’s lost his mind.”
In the comments section, author, professor and social commentator Roxanne Day called out Apatow for his remark, tweeting in response, “That’s a wild thing to say to Judd. As a fan, I challenge you to really reconsider this. It wasn’t uncontrolled violence. The video is widely available, so you know that.”
Many other fans also called out Apatow for posting and then deleting his comment.
“Judd Apatow deleted that tweet when his last comment surfaced. Mind your miracle whip next time,” one person wrote.

Another person added, “I think Judd Apatow deleted his tweet but that was 100 percent the biggest overreaction ever.”
“Of course @JuddApatow deleted his post when he found out she wasn’t popular,” another person wrote. “If it stays awake, it goes wrong. It’s hard to say these days which way is the most advanced. Best to just wait and see what the conventional wisdom is.”
The Independent reached out to Apatow’s representative for comment.
At the beginning of the ceremony, Regina Hall, who hosted the ceremony alongside Schumer and Wanda Sykes, poked fun at Smith and Pinkett Smith’s marriage.
