Here are Mark Cannizzaro’s PGA Championship picks:
The sixth time will be the attraction: Spieth completes the career Grand Slam with a Wannamaker Trophy, the only one he is missing. Spieth starts the week in excellent form after winning at Hilton Head and coming close to winning at the Byron Nelson last week.
If he putts like he did at his best, Spieth will win.
Since Spieth won his third major at the British Open in 2017, Spieth’s five previous PGA attempts have been a tie for 28th place in 2017, T12 in 2018, T3 in 2019, T71 in 2020 and T30 last year. This is the year.
If he can improve his chipping, which will be crucial in Southern Hills, Hovland, a three-time PGA Tour winner, has a strong chance of winning given his local connections, having left for Oklahoma State. He’s a great ball forward, leading the field in shots won in his last 20 rounds of hitting balls.
The World’s Hottest Player comes in with great mojo after winning four of his last seven starts (excluding New Orleans, which was a team event). The Masters champion once called Southern Hills one of his all-time favorite spots. Combine that with his world No. 1 ranking and… look out.
Few pay any attention to the Aussie but they may have forgotten his win at The Players. Scheffler’s remarkable run overshadowed what Smith did and has become one of the best players in the world.
He is the only player on the field who was born and raised in Oklahoma. His hometown is less than two hours from Southern Hills, which he says is one of his favorite spots. Last fall he won his first PGA Tour tournament of his career, and his home advantage will help him do that.
