Jordan Peele has shared the inspiration behind the title of his upcoming film, nope.
The writer-director first revealed the name of his next feature film with the release of a trailer last July. Set in a remote Californian town, the horror film will have the residents witness an unspecified abnormal event.
In a panel discussion at the film industry conference CinemaCon on Wednesday (April 27), Peele explained why he decided to give the feature film this remarkable name.
“I love a rapt audience that says, ‘No!’ or ‘Get out of the house!’” he told the crowd.
“I love encouraging this interaction because it gives the audience a unique experience. Roller coasters alone are no fun. Fear alone is no fun. You need that energy.”
nope reunites Peele with British actor Daniel Kaluuya, who starred in his first feature film Go out (2017), for which Peele won an Oscar. Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun are also there nopeis busy.
That Us The director further tied the title to his experiences as a black moviegoer and the sense of community one felt when watching something intense.
Describing the film as “a ride,” he continued, “The title speaks to the idea of being in tune with what the theater audience is thinking and feeling.
“I know a lot of people who say if it’s a scary movie, they say, ‘No!’ Especially black audience, right? We love horror, but there is a skepticism.”
The filmmaker added that he plans to capitalize on the number of times audiences say “no” while watching his upcoming film.
nope It’s set to be released in UK cinemas on July 22nd.
