Fans have accused Nickelodeon of homophobia after JoJo Siwa revealed she was not invited to the network’s 2022 Kids’ Choice Awards.
The 18-year-old pop star, who came out as LGBTQ+ in 2021, has worked closely with Nickelodeon over the years since signing a major talent deal with Nickelodeon in 2017.
But despite being nominated for the sixth straight year, fans were confused by Siwa’s absence from the ceremony, which took place on Saturday (April 9).
In an Instagram video posted the night of the awards ceremony, Siwa said, “Many of you have asked why I’m not at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards tonight, and the answer is very simple: I wasn’t invited. ”
“I’m not sure why, but I just didn’t get an invitation,” she added.
Outraged by the news, fans took to Twitter to voice their grievances with the network.
“If you’ve had young children in the family like I have over the past few years, you know how extremely popular JoJo Siwa is. A year after she came out as a lesbian and cut her hair, she wasn’t invited to the Kids’ Choice Awards. It’s like not inviting Brad Pitt to the Oscars,” wrote one user.
Another tweeted: “Nickelodeon better have a damn good reason not to invite Jojo Siwa because they are [sic] Looks pretty homophobic.”
Many pointed out that Siwa “has been the face of Nickelodeon for years” and branded the network’s misstep as “completely unacceptable”.
While Siwa herself didn’t directly call the fact that she wasn’t invited homophobic, she did share a few tweets from others who did: “That was the only year @itsjojosiwa Wasn’t invited to the Kids Choice Awards, does she come out and cut her hair?????? So @Nickelodeon.”
The Independent has reached out to representatives from Nickelodeon and Siwa for comment.
