JOJO DIAZ has been inspired by the heroes of George Kambosos Jr – and will use it as motivation to land an undisputed title fight with him.
Kambosos beat the odds and At the same time Teofimo Lopez last weekend in New York, won the WBA, IBF, WBO and WBC ‘Franchise’ belts.
The only jewel missing to officially become the undisputed lightweight king is Devin Haney’s full WBC title, which Diaz will challenge on Saturday.
The adamant American, like Kambosos, is the underdog in betting and will use the Australian’s performance to stoke his own sadness.
Diaz, 29, told SunSport: “I was motivated by the fact that this is everything I ever dreamed of.
“Fighting in Vegas is the main event for the WBC lightweight title, which is broadcast on primetime networks like DAZN.
“This has been everything I ever dreamed of, so the momentum was there, but seeing something like Kambosos win, there’s nothing as shocking as that of boxing.
“But it gave me extra motivation because I know that anything can happen in boxing and I know that I put in the time and effort.
“God will bless me with victory.”
Haney, 23, who was promoted by Eddie Hearn, verbally agreed to put all titles in line with Lopez, 23, just days before Kambsos, 28, spoiled the party.
But then, the undefeated champion turned his attention to newly crowned light ruler, who will be the head to see in Las Vegas.
Now, like Kambosos did with Lopez, Diaz plans to throw yet another wrench in the lightweight works and rob not only Haney’s title, but his undisputed hit to glory. .
He said: “After this match, I want to challenge the Kambosos without question.
“If everything goes well and my ending looks spectacular, and the Kambosos want to fight and DAZN and Eddie Hearn are in, we can make it happen.
“I’ve seen and witnessed everything that can be thrown at me in the ring and nothing Devin Haney has to offer is anything new.
“I’m going out there, looking spectacular on Saturday night by putting in a lot of pressure and using my ring background, my experience, my boxing tactics.
“But also my speed and strength. I’m just so happy to be out there and performing and rocking the world and the lightweight division. ”
Haney never technically won the famous green and gold ring, was instead elevated from the ‘provisional’ champion to the full title.
That comes after 33-year-old Vasiliy Lomachenko was transferred to ‘Franchor’ status, before Lopez triumphed over the Ukrainian in October 2020.
It led to Haney’s opponents accusing him of legitimacy, one of Diaz’s biggest verbal weapons in the build-up of their fight.
He said: “I just wanted to punch him in the face for all that he was saying.
“I just feel like he got here the easy way, not the hard way and I want him to pay the price for that.
“I’m going to do everything I can to try to take him down, of course, I’m not going to be so overpowered, swinging and looking for a knockout.
“I will fight smart and fight defensively and make sure I am applying the right pressure.
“If the opportunity presents itself when I injure him, it’s best to believe that I’ll be in the knockout stages.”
