Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl debuted in 2003. The last film, however, was not well received by critics and did not do as well at the box office as the others. Disney still decided to move forward with a sixth film, but Depp would not be in it.

In 2018, Depp’s ex-wife and Aquaman Star, Amber Heard, posted a comment accusing Depp of being abusive. When this story broke, Disney distanced itself from Depp before any evidence was revealed. Depp has worked with Disney on many other projects including Alice in Wonderland, In the forestand The Lone Ranger.

“I didn’t quite understand how after this long relationship and a fairly successful relationship, certainly for Disney, I suddenly found myself guilty until proven innocent… I was actually approached to help write Pirates 6… my feeling was that these characters can, so to speak, say a fitting farewell. A franchise can only last so long and there is a way to end such a franchise. And I thought that the characters deserved to finish their franchise on a very good note. I intended to keep going until it was time to stop.”
Disney is still making progress with Pirates of the Caribbean projects without Johnny Depp
Though Disney doesn’t have a Jack Sparrow, it did announce a new female-led spin-off Pirates of the Caribbean Universe. The spinoff would star and be written by Margot Robbie birds of prey Screenwriter Christina Hodson. However, very few details have been shared about this project since the announcement.
Meanwhile, Disney isn’t the only studio to distance itself from Depp, as Warner Bros. also removed him from the Fantastic Beasts movies. Depp played Gellert Grindelwald in the first two films, but was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen to the The Secrets of Dumbledorewhich is currently in cinemas.
