He fell ill with Covid after The Wurzels – who still hit 150 gigs a year – played in Manchester this month.

He died surrounded by his family in hospital in Gloucester on Friday.

“We can’t believe we’ll never see you behind those drums again,” said Tommy Banner, the longest-serving member of the Wurzels whose hits include I Am A Cider Drinker.

“We thought you were indestructible. We’ll miss you John, the grumpy old man. We were all shocked.”

A spokesman for Somerset’s Watchet Festival, where The Wurzels regularly perform, said: “RIP John and thank you for being a true regular. You’ll be missing out on a lot.”

The Wurzels manager Sil Willcox said: “We were all shocked, Morgy has the best sense of humor and the kindest heart and our thoughts are with his family.

Sil added: “The band intends to continue but John will always be remembered and loved by his fans, friends and band.”

Morgan has been drumming for The Wurzels since 1981 and continued to perform with the comedic band until two weeks ago.

Hailing from Somerset, the band is best known for their number one hit ‘The Combine Harvester’ and number three hit ‘I Am A Cider Drinker’, both of which peaked in 1976.
