Joe Girardi booed by Phillies fans as pressure mounts

Could Joe Girardi’s days in Philadelphia be numbered?

The former Yankees manager was booed off the field by Phillies fans in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game at Citizen Bank Park when he went out to take pitcher Zack Wheeler out of the game. Wheeler had only pitched 78 pitches and not allowed any runs, and fans clearly didn’t approve of the skipper’s decision to draw the ace when the game was still scoreless.

Jose Alvarado, coming on for Wheeler, closed the inning quickly but the game remained scoreless after the ninth. In the 10th, Girardi brought on Brad Hand – who gave up both runs in the 2-1 loss to complete Texas’ two-game win over Rangers.

The Phillies are now 11-14 on the season and 121-126 during Girardi’s tenure. Philadelphia has the fourth-highest payroll in the league as of 2022, but so far that hasn’t translated into wins.

After the game, Girardi was asked about the team’s mindset as the fighting continues.

“We have to play better,” said Girardi. “We have to find ways to win games and series.

“They come out and work hard every day. And they’re mad. We are all angry about that. But they have the ability to do it and I believe they will.”

With Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber anchoring the offense and Wheeler and Aaron Nola making a double strike as strong as possible, it feels like Girardi is on the verge of surrender or silence in Philly.
