Joe Biden calls Putin ‘a butcher’, visits Ukrainian refugees

Vladimir Putin is “a butcher,” President Biden said Saturday after taking an emotional trip to visit Ukrainian refugees at Warsaw’s PGE Narodowy Stadium.

“He’s a butcher,” Biden told a reporter who asked him what he thought of Putin after speaking to just a few of the 3.7 million Ukrainians who fled the Russian invasion.

“Well you’re all brave, brave, brave,” he told evacuees during his 30-minute visit.

The president wore a black face mask and a navy blue baseball cap with the Beau Biden Foundation logo – but frequently lowered the face covering while he spoke.

“I love you, I love you,” he said to a Polish woman volunteer at World Central Kitchen, a charity organized by celebrity chef José Andrés to feed thousands of evacuees who took temporary shelter in the stadium.

“Your father or your mother, who had the eyes?” he asked the woman as he pulled her into a hug.

Biden later spoke to members of a family from Mariupol, the port city under relentless attack by Russian forces.

He picked up a young girl in his arms and gave her a quick hickey — “I don’t speak Ukrainian, but tell her I want to take her home,” he said, laughing to a translator — and spoke to a tearful woman, who said She had lost sight of her husband and son while they were fighting with Ukrainian forces to defend their city.

“My son was in the war for a year,” Biden said with compassion. “I know you’re going to say a silent prayer any moment, please God.”

Speaking through a translator, the woman told Biden of her anger at Russian President Vladimir Putin for launching the invasion.

“Ukrainian mothers are ready to strangle him with their bare hands,” she said.

Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski accompanied Biden during the tour.

Biden’s visit comes two days after the White House announced plans to welcome up to 100,000 Ukrainians to the United States — and send an additional $1 billion in humanitarian aid to Poland and other European nations grappling with the world’s biggest refugee crisis have been struggling since World War II.

At least 2 million people, mostly women, children and the elderly, have taken refuge in Poland as Russian forces continue to shell their hometowns.

Biden is on a three-day diplomatic mission in Europe that included stops that allowed him to “see the humanitarian crisis firsthand,” he said Friday.

“Honestly, part of my disappointment is that I can’t see it firsthand like I’ve done in other places,” Biden said during a briefing in Rzeszow, in southeastern Poland.

“They understandably won’t let me go across the border and see what’s going on in Ukraine,” the commander-in-chief said.
