Jim Caldwell has a plan for Justin Fields if hired as HC Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears completed a second interview with former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell on Tuesday. While Caldwell has interviewed the Bears before about their head coach position, the interview has more significance for the Bears’ new general manager.

Former Kansas City CEO Ryan Poles was officially hired as general manager of the Bears on Tuesday, and interviewing Caldwell was his first business order. Caldwell is the most polarizing figure on the Bears’ list of candidates to fill their head coach position.

Perhaps the reason why Caldwell became the most criticized candidate is because of his relationship with Bill Polian. Polian was the consultant the Bears hired to initially oversee the team’s search for a new general manager and head coach.

With Poles now available, Bears fans hope that the general manager isn’t forced to pair up with Caldwell. Caldwell was hired by Polian in 2009 to be the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

Another reason Caldwell’s candidacy was met with skepticism was because of his age. Caldwell is now 67 years old and there are many questions about whether the head coach is a long-term investment. That question arises for the Bears as they have a sophomore quarterback at Justin Fields and a 36-year-old general manager in Poland.

Despite the age difference, Caldwell already has a plan in place should he become head coach of the Bears. Jordan Schultz, podcast partner of the Bears’ wide receiver Allen Robinson, report on Wednesday that the Bears’ interview with Caldwell was successful and that the head coach candidate has a plan for Fields.

The Chicago Bears may be hiring someone ready for Justin Fields.

The idea that Caldwell has a plan for Fields would certainly be an encouraging sign. The main reason why former Bears head coach Matt Nagy was fired was that he not only didn’t build an offensive plan centered around Fields, but he never had a plan to develop Fields.

The idea that Caldwell had a blueprint for an offensive system that would highlight the strengths of what Fields does best would certainly be the best for the Bears franchise.

Another encouraging sign is that the Bears are impressed with what Caldwell has in store for Fields. It’s a direct signal that despite Nagy’s underperformance, the Chicago Bears feel that Fields still has the potential to be a franchise’s defender.
