Next week is Valentine’s Day but many of us are too tired of our busy lives to perform on the big night.
So it’s not uncommon for some people to take aphrodisiacs to get in the mood. But which one really works?
From goji berries to maca powder, Sun Sexpert Georgette Culley tries several varieties and ranks them out of five.
It’s hard to see what’s sexy about these slimy little sea creatures, but they’re probably the best-known aphrodisiac.
Shellfish are high in zinc which is said to boost libido. I mixed my lemon and tabasco to mask the fishy taste but it didn’t do much for me. But my partner, who had three, ended up going crazy. After the tabasco, my mouth was the only thing that felt hot.
NOT only does it taste great, it also contains two important chemicals – tryptophan and phenylethylamine – that release happy hormones, putting you in a good mood.
The former is a building block of serotonin, a brain chemical important for sexual arousal.
The latter is a natural stimulant like amphetamine, and is released in the brain when people fall in love.
After gorging on almost an entire box of chocs, I definitely feel in love but also a little annoyed. In the end, I’d rather cuddle and bubble bath than any of the geeks.
HORNY TARGET EYE: 4/5
THIS aptly named dietary supplement originates from Asia and contains chemicals that help increase blood flow and improve sexual function. It is said to work for both men and women. So is it GOAT in aphrodisiacs?
It took about two weeks to a month to start but I did feel a slight increase in libido but maybe it was the placebo effect. Either way, I’m not complaining.
GOJI BERRIES: 4/5
THIS “superfood” is said to boost your sex life. The little red berries are said to boost testosterone production in both men and women – making us feel super sexy. I really don’t like the taste, though. It’s a weird, rather bitter taste, and they’re hard to chew quickly and swallow.
But all was not lost. After opening half of the small bag, I feel more comfortable and at ease than before. And after a salty night, I caught my boyfriend sneaking up on my morning smoothie.
MACA POWDER: 2/5
THIS plant, in the Andes mountains, is believed to be a natural aphrodisiac that can help increase fertility and give you bigger breasts. What if you don’t love?
But there’s a trade-off – it tastes like expired Ovaltine, so I had to add a lot of sugar to try to make it viable.
After a few cups, my senses felt more heightened, making every touch from my partner all the more enjoyable. But I couldn’t shake the bitter aftertaste and felt nauseous so all action was quickly cancelled.
FRESH PICTURE: 4/5
Dried or fresh fruit, considered seductive because of its resemblance to female genitalia, according to scientists, makes us turn. I tried a new one – it was soft and pretty syrupy. It’s not annoying but I don’t like it.
I lose half a dozen as they get better. I definitely finally felt a bit of fruit later when I found my boyfriend irresistible in his Marks & Sparks pajamas and it wasn’t long before we got used to it.
ALMOND NUTS: 3/5
FOODS rich in vitamin E are said to encourage the production of sex hormones, which help boost sex drive. Almonds have been associated with fertility since ancient times.
After I snacked on them all day, I definitely felt my mood lift and my sense of desire increased.
But whether this comes down to modesty or my toddler finally settling into an early sleep and giving himself a decent adult time, I’m not sure.
That said, I’m definitely the one complaining.
RED WINE: 2/5
Moderate amounts of red wine are thought to improve libido and sexual function in women.
Resveratrol, a potent antioxidant found in the skins of red grapes, increases blood flow to your vicinity and thus increases your chances of orgasm.
But don’t overdo it because too much alcohol will paralyze you underneath, affecting your ability to “finish”.
After two (generous) drinks at dinner with my partner, I became sloppy and dirty. But I couldn’t resist another glass and ended up desperate to hit the bedroom. . . for a crew.
Feeding your partner strawberries is a miracle, but they’re also packed with vitamin C that helps produce sex and reproductive hormones like androgens, estrogens and progesterone, which are important for arousal.
For starters, my partner blindfolded me in bed and fed me strawberries dipped in chocolate sauce.
The lack of sensation makes every touch and kiss heightened and the whole experience very sensual and romantic. Just don’t use your best sheet. . .
