What Skarsgård remembered was the similarity between Old Norse and his native language, Swedish. And he noticed that some of the words in the dialogue were recognizable.

Some The Northman Scenes were shot in muddy rainy conditions. And according to Eggers, those challenging aspects of filming may have contributed to Skarsgård’s gripping performance.
“I’m just trying to get the scene right, but I think part of Alex’s performance is just because he wanted to wring my neck,” said the filmmaker IndieWire. “It’s not a calculated, sadistic directorial technique. It’s just that we had focus noise or the lens fogged up or someone slipped in the mud and the shot wasn’t usable.”
Eggers revealed that an intense ritual scene required the cast to work all night in the cold and rain. And when the scene had to be reshot, Skarsgård thought Eggers did it on purpose.

“The adrenaline these guys needed over and over again was so sustained,” he said. “Then we got it and it was like, ‘This is a degree, thanks everyone, go home, wonderful work.'”
“And then, as everyone gets into their cars and takes off their clothes on the way back to the trailer, we find that the lens was fogged up on the good shot,” Eggers continued. “So we said, ‘You guys have to come back, put your wet clothes back on and do it again.’ Alex was like, ‘You did that on purpose!’”

“It was physically and mentally the most difficult job I’ve ever had, but also the most rewarding,” he said total movie. “The days were really long and hard and we were out in the mud and up on these mountain tops with the wind and the cold.”

Ironically, the week before he started filming The Northmanfor which Skarsgård shot his scenes as tech billionaire Lukas Matson on Lake Como successor.
“So I literally played one of the richest guys in the world in a crazy beautiful mansion surrounded by yachts and helicopters and luxury and got on a plane and flew to Iceland to get tied up and dragged through the mud.” , he reminds. “It was definitely a wake-up call and a humbling experience.”
