HBO Max seems to bring Pennywise back out of our nightmares. Author Stephen King is known for his ability to scare just about anyone, but there may not be another character as evil as Pennywise the Clown. Pennywise, the villain in the novel It, terrified people in writing and on screen. Now the streaming platform could bring the insane clown to the comfort of our own homes with the It prequel series.
The ‘It’ prequel series is currently called ‘Welcome to Derry’
As of April 1, 2022, the series is only in development. However, Variety gives the name of the series as Welcome to Derry.
diversity writes, “The series, currently called Welcome to Derrybegins in the 1960s in the period before the events of It: chapter one, The 2017 film is based on Stephen King’s horror novel. The story will also include the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.”
Variety listed Andy Muschietti, the director of both It: chapter one and It: chapter twoas an executive producer on the show, along with Muschietti’s sister Barbara and Jason Fuchs.
According to Variety’s sources, “The Muschiettis and Fuchs developed the story for the show, while Fuchs wrote the script. Andy would also direct the first episode, should the project go live. The A Authors Room is now open. Warner Bros. Television is the studio behind the project, with WB producing both films.”
What is Pennywise the Clown?
Pennywise appears to the children be depicted in; characterized in It as a clown, but the creature can take almost any form. It takes the person’s greatest fear and manifests it. For example, Eddie, a character in the book, finds germs and diseases in general scary. When Pennywise torments him, he emerges in the form of a leper with weeping wounds and threatens to infect Eddie.
This ability creates endless possibilities for horror in the It prequel series. Depending on what each person is afraid of, the monster can manifest itself in that fear.
The prequel series It has many stories to tell about the people of Derry
King’s stories often star off characters his other novels, and many of the characters exist in the same universe. in the 11/22/63, In the book, the main character meets two children who appear in it Itand they point to Pennywise. It gives fans a glimpse into Pennywise’s origins, and the novel implies the creature has existed for centuries.
the It Prequel series could create stories about past residents of Derry and their encounters with the monster. The novel contains stories from the past interwoven into the story of the Loser’s Club and their defeat by Pennywise, such as the incident at The Black Spot, a popular nightclub that burned down.
Currently, the project is only listed as “under development” and has not yet officially received the green light. However, judging by the popularity of the characters, the success of the film, and King’s colossal fan base, it seems like this is the case It Prequel series could be a hit for HBO Max.
