Islanders give Clutterbuck, Paris extensions to NHL trade deadline

Instead of selling on deadline, the islanders have committed to their core.

The team signed Cal Clutterbuck and Zach Parise — two trade candidates — to contract renewals. Clutterbuck got two more years while Parise got one.

Clutterbuck, 34, will remain a mainstay in the fourth line of Islanders. He had been dropped from the team’s roster in Philadelphia on Sunday, which Islanders coach Barrydios insisted it was simply a maintenance. Apparently, Defiance was telling the truth.

Clutterbuck, who is in his ninth season with the Islanders, will remain in his penalty-killing, crunching role — a role that very much defines the way the Isles want to play.

Parise, who said Thursday he wants to stay with the Islanders, has played well for them this season at the age of 37, scoring eight goals with 16 assists.

The islanders also stuck to their other potential trade targets, holding on to Semyon Varlamov, Zdeno Chara and Andy Greene.
