Ironman 70.3 Texas: Athlete dies after participating in triathlon swim in Galveston, organization confirms on Facebook

GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) — An athlete who competed in Ironman 70.3 Texas in Galveston on Sunday died after competing in the swimming portion of the triathlon, the organization said in a Facebook post.

The athlete required medical attention during the 1.2-mile saltwater swim that included a loop along the Gulf Coast, according to organizers. Security personnel helped the athlete until he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.

“We share our deepest sympathy with the athlete’s family and friends and will continue to offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time. Thank you to the swim safety personnel and first responders who worked quickly to provide medical support to the athlete,” the Facebook post read.

The triathlon consists of a swim and a 56-mile bike course with a loop along the coast before a 13.1-mile run with four loops through Moody Gardens and Offatts Bayou.
