Iowa school shooting: 3 students are in critical condition after the shooting at East High School in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — Authorities were responding to a shooting Monday afternoon at East High School in Des Moines, Iowa that left three students in critical condition, according to fire department spokesman Ahman Douglass.

Douglass told CNN the victims included two boys and a girl. All three were taken to area hospitals.

Police began receiving calls around 2:48 p.m. CT (3:48 p.m. ET), said Police Sgt. Paul Parisek.

Police have arrested potential suspects, Parizek said.

According to a Twitter statement from Des Moines Public Schools, the school is currently on lockdown.

“There are reports of a shooting near East High School. The police are actively investigating. The district works with employees and families. We will have more information as it becomes available. East High School is currently a suspended school. More information will be available shortly,” the school district tweeted.

The Kansas City Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is on site and providing assistance with the investigation, the agency tweeted.

CNN is reaching out to the school district and police department for more information.
