Ubisoft is the latest studio to face takeover rumors in the midst of the gaming industry’s takeover whirlwind. Two private investors are reportedly interested in buying the developer if their share price falls.
Originally founded by five brothers from the Guillemot family, Ubisoft could join Bungie and Activision Blizzard in the recent tidal wave of major acquisitions shaking up the gaming world.
Ubisoft has been involved in the development of groundbreaking titles since 1986, with the company fully owning the Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy franchises. However, this is just the tip of the Ubisoft gaming package iceberg.
Rumors about the company have been circulating since February 2022 when the financial world took an interest in the company. Multi-billion dollar investment firms Blackrock and KPP have begun actively snooping around the AAA gaming studio. This is according to a report by Bloomberg.
The Ubisoft brand has long been very defensive to maintain a strong Guillemot family presence. The company has previously fended off buyout attempts, but a number of bad PR and bad decisions got the company into trouble.
The internal instability has been coupled with growing suspicion from gamers worldwide about Ubisoft’s attempts to integrate NFTs into their gaming ecosystem, as well as their lax anti-cheat systems.
The battle for Ubisoft means anyone interested in buying the company is getting an incredible deal on the gaming studio bundle. The company is now worth half what it was in 2018, from a stock price of $110 per share to under $50.
Speculation has mounted on Twitter as to who might make the purchase of the mammoth gaming studio and what this intellectual property shift would mean for the gaming landscape.
In a response to Kotaku about the rumors, a Ubisoft representative said, “We do not comment on rumors or speculation.” Before we continue, “we are ideally positioned to take advantage of the rapid industry growth and platform opportunities that are emerging.”
