HOME Alone remains one of the country’s most beloved films – but after filming the Christmas classic, the cast has been hit by scandal, tragedy and misfortune.
This week, Devin Ratray, who plays Buzz McCallister, turned himself in to the police in Oklahoma City, after accused of assaulting his girlfriend in one row.
The 44-year-old has been charged with domestic assault and battery by strangulation and several other counts.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of the former child star after allegedly assaulting the woman two weeks ago and he has since been released with a fine of £16,000 ($25,000).
Ratray is not the only one causing controversy since Movie released in 1990 – here we look back at the ‘curse’ of Home Alone.
Macaulay Culkin – ‘Drug Abuse’
The child star plays Kevin McCallister, who is accidentally left at home while his family travels to France.
Macaulay reprized the role in Home Alone 2 and went on to star in other films including My Girl, The Good Son, The Pagemaster and Richie Rich.
However, in his personal life, he struggled with grief after his ‘divorce’ from his parents in 1994 to prevent them from controlling his huge fortune.
At the age of 18, he married actress Rachel Milner, but two years after their marriage in 1998, they separated and divorced in 2002.
He was also embroiled in Michael Jackson’s child sex scandal but insists he was never abused by the pop star.
Macaulay credits his relationship with the musician to their mutual exposure to fame at a very young age.
“A lot of things happened, big and fast to me, and I think he identified that,” he told the Inside Of You With Michael Rosenbaum podcast.
In 2004, Macaulay was arrested for possession of marijuana and narcotics without a prescription and received a 1-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty.
Police are said to have found 17.3 grams of marijuana, eight Xanax pills and 16 pills containing clonazepam, a narcotic used to treat anxiety and seizures.
Macaulay later denied ever being heavily addicted to drugs but said people were right to worry “when silly things” are going on in his life.
“But no, I wasn’t throwing six thousand heroin a month or anything,” he told The Guardian in 2016.
John Heard – ‘stalk and attack’
John Heard played Kevin Peter McCallister’s loving father in the iconic Christmas movie.
But in his personal life, things have been tough, with the star locked in a bitter custody battle over son Jack with actress Melissa Leo.
Throughout the ’90s, John faced a number of charges and was found guilty of trespassing his ex’s home in Baltimore in 1997.
He was also charged with third-degree assault after allegedly slapping Melissa, as well as stalking her and their son and allegedly beating her new partner.
Melissa told People magazine: “I fear for my son’s safety and my safety.
John and his second wife Sharon had two children together, Max and Annika, but in 2017 they were devastated when their son passed away.
In an obituary, Sharon said Max “died peacefully in his sleep” and was “deeply saddened” by allegedly “not having a single father involved in his life”.
Six months later, John was found dead in his hotel room by a maid aged 71 after he suffered a fatal heart attack.
Kieran Culkin – Childhood is full of pain
Not everyone knows that Macaulay’s younger brother, Kieran Culkin, starred in the first two Home Alone movies.
He went on to have success in films such as Father Of The Bride, She’s All That and Scott Pilgrim Vs The World.
More recently, he received huge acclaim playing Roman Roy in The Succession.
However, in his rise to fame, he had to face huge difficulties because of his father, who the star said was “not a good person and … probably not a person at all. good parents”.
“I never considered him a father. He doesn’t really belong here, and when he’s gone is the most meaningful thing,” Kieran told The Hollywood Reporter.
He claimed that his father had been missing for three months, leaving their mother to take care of the children – they eventually split up in 1995 when Kieran was 13 years old.
The hardships are echoed by brother Macaulay, who told Marc Maron’s WTF podcast in 2018 that their father was “physically and mentally” abusive and “envious” of their success.
John Candy – Sad Early Death
Comedy legend John Candy had a brief role in Home Alone, playing taxi driver Gus Polinski.
The actor sadly passed away 4 years after the film’s release, while he was filming the Wild West comedy Wagons East.
After wrapping up his last shot, he cooked a celebratory meal for his assistants and was found dead in his bed the next day at the age of 43.
John’s early death was the result of a heart attack – throughout his life he battled weight problems, heavy alcoholism and smoked a pack of cigarettes a day.
It is thought that he became addicted to cocaine during his time as a Hollywood star.
Roberts Blossom – Family Tragedy
Roberts Blossom gave an impressive performance as old man Marley, Kevin’s misunderstood neighbor.
The actor and poet became a widow in 1982, eight years before Home Alone debuted, after his second wife Marilyn died.
His last performance was in the 1995 film The Quick And The Dead and in later life he was transferred to a nursing home.
Roberts died of a stroke in 2011 at the age of 87 and three years later, his only son Michael also died of cancer.
