I’m Britain’s strictest headmaster, I think detention is an ‘act of love’

One HEADTEACHER dubbed the strictest in the UK hailed the detention as an “act of love” and banned conversations in the hallways.

Katharine Birbalsingh says parents despise her controversial discipline tactics – including scheduled recess and “no reason” behavior policy.

But Katharine, who has headed Michaela Community School since 2014, believes her policies are more equitable and sees her institution as an opportunity for children to “change their stars”.

Talking to TimeShe suggests that firmly scheduling all aspects of the day is an “effective way” to help her students stay focused.

She said: “It means children move [classes] in a minute and a half; is not interrupted.

“You’re not going to watch the fights in the hallways or the kids getting up late.”

An in-depth look at the school’s day-to-day operations also revealed that teachers regularly monitor students entering and leaving rooms at set times to “make sure” that students never need to go out of class.

Katherine also believes it’s a great way to “prevent crevice meetings” – implementing positive habits in the home that parents may not be able to follow.

“If you have a mother at home who talks to you about the political situation of the day, etc., it doesn’t matter if you miss a bit.

“But if you depend entirely on school for success because you come from a difficult background, you cannot afford to break out of lessons to go to school.”

Her methods have been called “oppressive” by critics as she has been described as “scary” and a “dragon woman.”

However, Birbalsingh’s suggests that most skeptics don’t “accept” her children because they reach 7th grade with personality traits she describes as “rude, monstrous, and asshole.”

She insists it is only after studying at her school that they become more holistic.

“It’s hard to believe when you meet them now, but I promise you we’ll teach them to be like this,” she said.

‘WOMEN DRAGON’

Her so-called transition policy sees every child under a harsh discipline campaign.

Among them are her terrifying detention plans that are said to be “acts of love” for misdeeds, including being late, presenting poorly, rolling her eyes, not buttoning her shirt, and even forgot to bring pen.

During the meetings, they are also said to have imbibed Michaela’s daily behavioral demonstrations, which take place at regular intervals every day.

However, her controversial policies have resulted in academic success with Wembley school’s exam results among the best in the country.

In 2021, 82% of A-level students are reported to have secured places at Russell Group universities, including two at Cambridge.

Her work is not even recognized by Boris Johnsonwho praised Birbalsingh as a “strong and visionary.”

And with the headmistress now making national headlines, it has been confirmed that she and her school are the subject of an upcoming documentary, The Untold Truth About Children .

But amid the chaos that followed the pandemic, the strict headmaster is focused on ensuring his students make the most of class time through whatever means necessary.

She added: “If you are prevented from going to school for many months, you will fall further behind.

“Never before have disadvantaged children been so disadvantaged.”
