ONLINE trolls have mistaken a Florida woman for the daughter of a Russian politician and have subjected her to social media attacks.
“It’s not nice when your picture is posted in unlawful content,” said Ekaterina Lavrova, a realtor originally from Russia.
Lavrova says that for weeks she has been receiving threats from social media users who have confused her with the daughter of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov because the two share the same name.
“It sounds silly, but I never imagined that I would get into such a situation,” Lavrova said.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Lavrova said she has been targeted on multiple platforms. She has received hateful messages and calls, even targeting the real estate agency where she works.
“People want you to burn in hell, you know, ‘You should be deported,’ ‘Let’s take over your apartment and take someone from Ukraine,'” she said.
“Every day you think it’s getting better, it doesn’t stop.”
Lavrova said people posted to Twitter with their account information, followed by messages on their social media.
“They say, ‘This is his daughter. Let’s attack them,’” she said.
The real Sergei Lavrov is under personal sanctions for his role in the war against Ukraine.
Lavrova believes people were quick to target her due to the name similarity without checking if her information is correct. Now she worries about the safety of her family.
“It just takes one crazy person to come and do something and God knows what they can do,” she said.
Lavrova tried to report the harassment on Twitter but said they didn’t remove the posts or comments because they “didn’t find a violation of our rules.”
“It would be helpful if Twitter, Google and Facebook would help clean up the wrong information,” Lavrova told The Sun.
“Unfortunately, most tweets don’t get deleted, even if they contain incorrect information.”
As the war rages on, Lavrova wants people to know that she is not the daughter of any Russian politician.
“I have no relationship with that person and I can’t influence that minister to stop,” she said.
Lavrova hopes to stop the attacks.
“We are praying for the end of this war and I understand that this is a difficult time for many people,” she told The Sun.
