Alan Davies has expressed his solidarity with Chris Rock after Will Smith brought the US comedian on stage at the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday (March 27).
said the British stand-up comedian in a new interview on Tuesday (March 29) that he will always “stand up for the comic” when asked about one of the most shocking incidents in the Academy Awards’ 94-year history.
During the awarding of the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature during the ceremony Sunday night at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.
“Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2can’t wait to see you,” Rock quipped, prompting Smith to go on stage and slap the stand-up comic.
In an Instagram statement, Smith later apologized for his behavior and said the joke about “Jada’s health condition was too much” for him – which prompted him to react emotionally.
Pinkett Smith announced last year that she shaved her head after battling alopecia.
During his interview with the BBC on Tuesday, Davies also said he didn’t think Rock was “referring” to Pinkett Smith’s health condition, adding that Smith’s reaction was “in no way reasonable”.
“The little trouble with people saying they’re offended, upset, and wanting to get comedians to moderate their remarks… My instinct, and every comedian’s instinct, is whenever you’re being told to moderate what.” You say your own instinct is always to do the opposite. And I’m sure that’s Chris Rock’s instinct…
“I’m a fan of Chris Rock,” Davies continued, revealing that he had tickets to see the comedian live at London’s Royal Albert Hall in May this year.
“I’ll stand up for the comic, I’m afraid.”
